French Moment at Barzakh

Listening While Muslim returns to Barzakh Cafe for an evening devoted to Qawwali.

Rooted in South Asia’s Sufi shrines, Qawwali carries poetry, voice, and rhythm to an ecstatic crescendo, best experienced live. This evening, we approach this centuries-old sacred tradition in a new way. Join us as we dig into recorded Qawwali from decades past to today, listening with intention and tuning in to the spiritual resonance that moves through it all.

Listening While Muslim (LWM) is a series of thematic listening parties co-created in 2018 by Asad Ali Jafri (DJ Ase Wonder) and Abdul-Rehman Malik. LWM brings together a deconstructed DJ set, storytelling, and intentional listening for a sonic journey that crosses continents, languages, and genres, exploring music at the intersection of faith, culture, and politics.

Barzakh Café also offers a curated selection of small plates and drinks. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, ease into the evening, and enjoy something from the kitchen or bar before the program begins. Happy Hour All Year.

Alida & the Nightshades sing Chavela

Alida and the Nightshades have been bringing back the Mexican ranchera throughout Brooklyn. In honor of Día de los muertos, they will focus on works made famous by one soul, the late Chavela Vargas. She’s a ranchera icon who proudly & relentlessly made her queerness known through her songs & performances in a culture & time where that was very frowned upon. With Luis Enrique McDougal on guitar, Alida Torres and Tatianna Overton will bring back the lamenting, sometimes haunting vocals of Chavela.
