The Brooklyn Chaabi Project (Day 2)

The Brooklyn Chaabi Project returns to Barzakh Cafe to mark the centennial year of Dahmane El Harrachi, the Algerian master whose songs reshaped the Chaabi tradition.
Born in 1926 in Algiers, El Harrachi took the music of the medina and carried it into the wider world — a mandole, a voice, and a way of seeing that made him one of the most beloved figures in Algerian song. This evening is built around his repertoire: the sly wit, the hard-won wisdom, and the rhythms that have kept these songs alive for generations. Alongside his classics, the set reaches into the tradition he belonged to, with music by Kamel Messaoudi, Cheikh Hasnaoui, and El Hachemi Guerouabi..
Led by mandole player and singer Tony Daniels, The Brooklyn Chaabi Project celebrates the genius, the unique sounds, and the timeless point of view of Algeria’s great musician — one hundred years on.

Barzakh Café also offers a curated selection of small plates and drinks. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, ease into the evening, and enjoy something from the kitchen or bar before the program begins. Happy Hour All Year.
