Moe Reen / Kyle Morgan & Ellie MacPhee

Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm
$20 adv / $25 dos

Ohio-based (and born and raised) country-folk songsmith Moe Reen writes from the heart, for the heart. A lifelong vocalist, their old-school country voice often garners comparisons to Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and other honky-tonk-heartbreak crooners of yesteryear. Moe’s witty lyrics, however, are distinctly modern. The songs on their debut EP, Grow Again (April 2024) include a finger-picking reflection on the malaise of seasonal depression alongside a slow-dancing lament comparing climate deniers and unrequited lovers. Moe’s marriage of sentimental sound with contemporary sentiment produces something distinctly their own: earnest lyrics cradled by melodies that tenderly soar to tend to the sore, soft spots of us all.

Kyle Morgan is a Brooklyn-based songwriter originally from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, where he grew up singing with his family at church and home.  With influences ranging from the classic roots music of the Carter Family and Hank Williams to more modern artists like Thom Yorke and Rufus Wainwright, Kyle sings songs of spiritual longing, struggle and redemption in an earnest tenor voice. He released three albums in the twenty-teens under the name Starcrossed Losers.  In 2022, his debut solo album, Younger at Most Everything, came out on Team Love Records.  His new LP, Ghost of a Problem, comes out May 22nd.

Ellie MacPhee (she/her) is a performing violinist and teacher in Brooklyn, New York. As a graduate of both Longy School of Music at Bard College and Oberlin Conservatory, MacPhee’s work is focused on the use of violin mastery as a landscape for emotional expression and joyful music making. Her path as a musician began with traditional folk and bluegrass music, which later propelled her into her study as a classical violinist.

AURORA NEALAND & BOMA BANGO

New Orleans resident and polymorphic artist AURORA NEALAND is spending a nice amount of time at barbès – tonight, she brings us fellow New Orleanians BOMA BANGO

Boma Bango takes the hypnotic, reverb drenched, tremolo-ed electric guitar heavy music from the 1960s in the Congo and reimagines it as if it came out of some humid outdoor bar in Southwest Louisiana.

Boma Bango, by taking musical cues from Congolese luminaries as Franco Luambo & le TPOK Jazz, L’Orchestra African Fiesta with Docteur Nico and Tabu Ley Rochereau, and Le Grand Kallé et l’African Jazz, has strived to create their own kind of improvisational music based upon the sounds from this golden age.

They reinvent old songs and write new ones in Louisiana French.

An established bandleader, composer, performer and improviser, Aurora Nealand has become a prominent force in the New Orleans music scene.  Combining the “formal education” – a music composition degree from Oberlin Conservatory and training at the Jacques Lecoq School of  Physical Theatre in Paris –  with the “informal”  experience of playing music in the streets and clubs of New Orleans and throughout the northern Hemisphere, Nealand has emerged as an innovative, sensitive and daring music creator and performer.

THE LUNAR FRONTIER: Cowboy Bebop x Eternal Wind

Saddle up, space cowboy – we’re riding into orbit with Eternal Wind Music. Inspired by the jazz-noir universe of the cult classic Cowboy Bebop, The Red Pavilion becomes a drifting frontier – part smoky jazz saloon, part space-age hideout.

Owen Chen’s Eternal Wind Quintet traces the journey of jazz from New Orleans to Tokyo and back – performing Yoko Kanno’s Cowboy Bebop score alongside the hard bop and blues standards that inspired it, from Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk to Art Blakey and Duke Ellington.

Eternal Wind is a cinematic jazz quintet led by guitarist Owen Chen, exploring film and game music through the lens of modern jazz improvisation, and atmospheric storytelling. Drawing from the language of bebop, post-bop, and contemporary jazz, the group reshapes familiar themes into music that feels intimate, restless, nostalgic and alive.

Described by BroadwayWorld as “tender, aching, dark, and explosively alive,” Eternal Wind features musicians from the jazz programs of New York University, Juilliard School, and Manhattan School of Music. The group is signed to the jazz label Origin Records with its debut album releasing March 2026.
